Frequently Asked Questions
Most frequent questions and answers
What is scalp micropigmentation (SMP) / micro scalp pigmentation (MSP)?
SMP (an acronym often used in the US) and MSP (an acronym used in the UK) refer to the same hair-loss procedure. This procedure involves using a high-end micropigmentation machine to deposit organic pigments into the scalp that gives the illusion of hair follicles.
Do you think getting SMP at a tattoo parlor, a good idea?
I think this is a terrible idea. Find someone who is knowledgeable about SMP, has years of experience doing the procedure, is empathetic about your situation, is detail-oriented because SMP is all about details, is patient so clients get quality treatment, and lastly is serious about his craft.
Is scalp micropigmentation for everyone?
I personally do not agree that SMP is for everyone. There are many factors to consider so it is important to consult with a practitioner who puts the health and the well-being of clients as his or her top priority.
Is scalp micropigmentation painful? Is anesthesia used to manage the pain?
Anesthesia is not used for SMP. The procedure can be painful but not intolerable. Some clients complain about the pain, and you have others who sleep through the procedure. I’ve never had a client who’s discontinued the treatment because of pain.
How long does the procedure take ?
The procedure can take up to ten hours or even more. For example, if the client requires a full-head treatment, the treatment will likely require three sessions and each session can last up to 5 hours. A density filling case usually takes 2 to 3 session, about 3 hours per session.
How much does the treatment cost?
This is the most popular question. Because the price is based on the extent of the hair loss, there is no simple answer. However, the standard cost for a shaved-head treatment is 3 million Korean Won, which is equivalent to 2500 USD. The treatment cost for parting and crown areas typically start from 800,000 thousand Korean Won, about 600 USD.
Do I have to miss work after I get the treatment?
No. As long as you get the treatment after work, you can go to work the next day.
Could SMP conceal scars ?
The short answer is yes. Knowing the nature, the extent, and the age of the scar is important before determining whether SMP is the right treatment.
Can someone with a severe form of alopecia get SMP?
The short answer is yes. But there are many factors to consider before getting SMP so consulting with the right SMP provider is critical.
What are the benefits of hair tattoo?
- SMP is relatively affordable compare to hair transplant and purchasing toupee in the long run.
- Once the procedure is complete; there is little to no maintenance needed.
- There are no known side effects (as long as no foreign elements—such as heavy metals: mercury, lead, nickle, etc.—are added to the organic pigment).
- SMP frees clients (who wore wigs or used concealers) to enjoy activities of which they previously were deprived. Activities include but not limited to contact sports, water activities, and even extreme sports such as skydiving and bungee jumping.
- Another benefit is the longevity of effect of SMP. Typically, after the first round of sessions, a client may comes in for a touch up after 4 years or even later. A touch up is typically cheaper than the initial treatment and takes less time to complete.
